Result: El Monstro Stops Zurdo- Collects WBA/WBO Cruiser Titles
By Miguel Maravilla
What an impressive performance it was as David “El Monstro” Benavidez took care of business in moving up in weight and dethroning WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez of Mazatlán, Mexico on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, becoming a three-division world champion.
The size difference was evident from the opening bell. After a slow start while both fighters studied each other in the opening round, Benavidez sneaked in a right hand to get things going and closed the final 10 seconds with a precise combination that unloaded on Ramirez. Imposing his size in the second, Zurdo stalked and stayed close to Benavidez, closing the distance in the process. However, Benavidez finished the round strong by creating space and putting together another combination.
Continuing to stay close and pressure Benavidez in the third, Zurdo was effective on the inside, but Benavidez once again closed the round with a sharp combination, letting his hands go freely. Benavidez got things going in the fourth with precision and effective combinations, dropping Zurdo in the final second of the round as the champion’s face began to show damage.
Despite the knockdown, Zurdo stayed close to Benavidez to begin the fifth, but the challenger continued to outwork and outland the champion with combinations. In the sixth, Zurdo appeared to be suffering from swelling around his eye, and another combination by Benavidez sent him to the canvas for a second time as the champion’s eye appeared badly damaged. Referee Thomas Taylor completed the count at 2:59 of the sixth round.
With the victory, Benavidez becomes a three-division world champion and remains undefeated at 32-0 with 26 KOs. Zurdo Ramirez falls to 48-2 with 30 KOs while relinquishing his titles.
