Miller Ends Pero’s Unbeaten Streak…Wins WBA Eliminator
Heavyweight boxing returned to Las Vegas as Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller of Brooklyn defeated Cuba’s Lenier Pero (13-0, 8 KOs), going the distance in a WBA World Heavyweight title eliminator Saturday night at BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau, headlining on DAZN.
The Cuban fighter Pero started fast, taking it to Miller, outworking him and beating him to the punch early on. Pero continued to press in round two, while Miller appeared to be off to a slow start, trying to figure out Pero’s style. In the third, Pero stayed active as Miller began to let his hands go and connect. In the fourth, Miller landed a questionable blow, prompting referee Thomas Taylor to issue a warning.
In the fifth, Miller and Pero mixed it up, trading relentlessly on the inside. The inside action continued in the sixth, with Miller pinning Pero on the ropes as the two exchanged, Miller landing the bolder punches. It was non-stop trading in the seventh as Miller began to create some separation, but the tough Pero did not hold back and kept Miller on alert. Referee Thomas Taylor issued a stern warning to both fighters late in the fight as Pero extended his arm and pawed, while Miller continued to trash talk.
Late in the fight, in the tenth, Miller let his hands go and connected with solid shots. The championship rounds saw Miller’s experience push through, as Pero continued to display heart and toughness, holding his own. There was a high output of punches for a heavyweight fight as both fighters battled to the final bell, embracing afterward in a display of mutual respect.
After twelve rounds, the judges scored the bout 117-111, 117-111, and 115-113 for Miller, earning him a hard-fought unanimous decision. With the victory, Miller improves to 28-1-2 (22 KOs), while Pero suffers his first defeat, falling to 13-1 (8 KOs) in a valiant effort.
