Matthysse At Age 45, Becomes Interim WBA Champion
By Gabriel F. Cordero
Experienced former world champion Soledad Matthysse (21-16-1, 4 KOs), 45, defeated undefeated favorite female star Samantha Worthington (12-1, 7 KOs), 30, by technical knockout in the ninth round for the interim WBA super lightweight world championship at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on the undercard of Shields vs. Crews-Dezurn II.
Worthington was outmatched by Matthysse’s vast experience, resources, and will to win. With immense pressure and a relentless attack, Matthysse reclaimed her world title through sheer courage and rigorous training, supported by her trainer and husband, Mario Narváez.
Mathysse was the WBA featherweight world champion in 2013 and the WBC featherweight champion in 2015. She is the sister of former welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse.
Edith Soledad, 45 years old, thus becomes the oldest Argentine boxer to be crowned world champion.
