Brazilian Carlos Prates defeated Australian former champion Jack Della Maddalena in the main event of UFC Australia on Saturday at RAC Arena in Perth in a spectacular fight, securing the victory in the third round. He now looks forward to a shot at the welterweight championship.
Prates defeated the top-ranked Maddalena in one of the most impressive performances of the night in Perth, further strengthening his standing in the welterweight division.
“I want to fight the champion. I came here for a big fight, and I trained hard for this. Now I believe I’m the number one contender at 77 kg, but I’ll prove I’m number one,” said Prates, who is aiming for the belt before eventually retiring.
The fighter from São Paulo, known as “Pesadelo” (“Nightmare”), set an intense pace and delivered a high-level performance against the former champion, who entered the contest ranked number one in the welterweight division.
In one of the best performances of his UFC career, Prates controlled the decisive moments and finished the fight emphatically in the third round, improving his record to seven wins in eight UFC fights.
In a preliminary bout in the light heavyweight division (93 kg), local fighter Kevin Christian defeated Brazilian Junior Tafa.
