Sex-selective abortions account for 80,000 unborn female babies - minister

ArmInfo. Over the past decades, about 80,000 girls have not been born in Armenia due to sex-selective abortions. This was announced by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia Narek Mkrtchyan during a government meeting on October 17.

In this regard, the Minister noted that selective abortions are one of the reasons for the degradation of the population structure of Armenia.
In turn, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, referring to the studies that he had previously reviewed, added that in the coming years, selective abortions will have or are already having a significant negative impact on the country's reproductive potential.
According to the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, in January-August 2024 in Armenia 21,876 children were born, which is 7.3% lower than the previous year, while 17,213 people died, which is 4.9% higher than the previous year. Thus, the absolute value of natural population growth was 4,663 people, which is 35.1% lower than the previous year.
