Result: Lauren Loses Comeback In Stockholm Fight Night At 50
By Per-Åke Persson
Former multiple world champion, the now 50-year-old Mikaela Lauren (33-9-1), made another comeback but unfortunately also showed once again that her best days are far behind her. She was outboxed by Lithuanian Vaida Masiokaite (better than her 11-20-6 record suggests) and lost after six rounds by scores of 59-55 twice and an overly generous 58-56.
Masiokaite kept Lauren at range and scored almost at will with her jab, while Lauren kept chasing on heavy legs.
Mikaela Lauren is in excellent shape for a 50-year-old, but as a boxer there isn’t much left.
In the co-feature, super middleweight Erik Mendoza (4-0) worked hard for a unanimous points win over Estonian Andrei Antonov (6-11-2) in what was the fight of the night. It was scored 58-56, 60-54, and 59-55 for the Swede, but it looked closer than that. Antonov, a southpaw, moved well and appeared to frustrate Mendoza, who, however, upped his work rate and finished strongly.
Featherweight Neo Vis Jagemar (5-0, 5 KOs) stopped the much smaller Rickard Bernath (2-26) in the third round. Jagemar, also a southpaw, looks promising but has been matched very carefully, and it’s time for him to step up the level of opposition.
Super middleweights Lorenso Ottosson (1-0-1) and Finnish-American Savon Saroosh (0-2-1) fought to a draw in a hard-fought, messy four-rounder.
Forty-seven-year-old heavyweight Aldo Colliander (16-3) made another comeback and looked too heavy and slow, but still outscored an even heavier and slower opponent in Bosnian Dinel Fejzic (3-7-3) in a slow-paced four-rounder.
