Should Murodjon Akhmadaliev have become urgently unavailable to fight Naoya Inoue for the undisputed belts, IBF#5 ex-Japanese super bantam champ Toshiki Shimomachi would have been a prepared replacement for MJ to square off against Monster instead. Such a scenario didn’t materialize, but Shimomachi (22-1-3, 12 KOs), an elongated 5’11” southpaw at 122, defeated Korean champ Han-Sol Lee (9-8-7, 4 KOs), 121.25, by a shutout decision (all 80-72) over a one-sided eight on the same show on Sunday in Nagoya, Japan.
Shimomachi, unbeaten since his sole split decision loss in 2016, made good use of advantageous height and reach, completely outboxing and outpunching the game Korean all the way. Toshiki, in the near future, may be given a world title shot since he is one of the best 122-pounders here in Japan.
