Hyundai Takes Steps for a Sustainable Future
Hyundai has set a goal – achieving the RE100 benchmark by 2025, established by the Climate Group, signifies a commitment to 100% renewable electricity usage.
As of now, HMIL already fulfills an impressive 64% of its energy requirements through renewable sources, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable practices within the automotive industry.
Green Power and Portfolio Expansion
To showcase its renewable energy portfolio, HMIL strategically purchases green power from the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX). This approach has proven successful, allowing the company to boost its renewable energy portfolio to 64%.
This places Hyundai ahead of the curve in comparison to other automakers in India. The commitment to the RE100 initiative highlights the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
Energy Conservation
Through innovative energy management systems, HMIL has successfully conserved energy equivalent to ~19,200 Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (TOE).
Key projects, such as the transition from conventional to LED lighting in 2017, thermo-ceramic coating on furnaces and ovens, and waste heat recovery in paint shops, showcase the company’s dedication to sustainable practices.
These initiatives not only reduce environmental impact but also contribute significantly to cost savings.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
Hyundai Motor India actively monitors and addresses both direct and indirect emissions in its manufacturing processes. By incorporating renewable energy sources and transitioning from propane to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), HMIL has already reduced CO2 emissions by an impressive 102,060 tonnes.
With plans to further decrease emissions by 161,940 tonnes in the next five years, the company demonstrates a proactive approach towards combating climate change.
Water Management
In response to water scarcity concerns, HMIL has implemented a zero liquid discharge system and established six reservoirs in its Chennai plant premises. These reservoirs, with a storage capacity of nearly 350,000 metric tonnes, enable rainwater harvesting, fulfilling 50% of the company’s water requirements.
By achieving 80% water neutrality and a 30% reduction in water usage over the past five years, Hyundai has become a trailblazer in efficient water management within the automotive industry.
Responsible Waste Management
Hyundai Motor India is unwavering in its commitment to minimizing and responsibly managing harmful substances. Initiatives like the implementation of screw press filters have resulted in a remarkable 19.4% reduction in hazardous waste and a 14.3% reduction in non-hazardous waste over the past five years. These achievements align with domestic laws and global standards, showcasing HMIL’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Investments in Electric Vehicles
Looking towards the future, HMIL has announced a substantial 10-year investment plan exceeding Rs. 32,000 crores. This investment is earmarked for the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) range and the enhancement of existing car and SUV platforms, including charging infrastructure.
By making significant strides in the electric vehicle market, Hyundai solidifies its position as a frontrunner in sustainable automotive solutions.
