"Free David": Classmates of detained 18-year-old protest outside UN Office in Yerevan
ArmInfo.Classmates and parents gathered in front of the United Nations headquarters in Yerevan today, April 2, to demand the release of 18-year-old David Minasyan, the high school student detained following an incident involving Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
They arrived at the UN office carrying signs that said "Freedom for David" and "Freedom for our friend." One of the protesters told reporters that not only current classmates, but also former classmates came to support Minasyan. They handed over letters to the UN office in Yerevan asking them to influence the Armenian authorities, specifically to urge them to change the pretrial detention measure against David Minasyan and transfer him to house arrest.
"we are protesting to bring attention to what is happening to our classmate today, and we hope this will lead to changes. The charges brought against Minasyan have nothing to do with him," the student noted.
The protesters stated that they will continue their protests, as they understand the situation and they are making. "By protesting in front of the UN office in Yerevan, we want to draw the attention of the international community to what is happening to young people and schoolchildren today, and of course, we expect some action to be taken and for the decision against Minasyan to be changed," added one of the classmates.
It should be noted that during today's briefing, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declined to comment on the student's arrest, citing his inability to interfere with the country's judicial decisions.
